A guide to garden paving

A guide to garden paving

What does garden paving mean and are there different types? Our latest guide explains where garden paving can be used and looks at what materials there are to pave your garden.

What is garden paving?

The definition of paving is ‘flat blocks of stone or concrete covering an area’. Garden paving therefore refers to an area in your garden that is covered in this way.

What is garden paving used for?

Generally, garden paving is used for patio areas, driveways and garden paths. It can also be used to create a foundation base for a garden shed or other structure.

How to choose your paving

With the choice of garden paving slabs on the market, it can be quite difficult to choose the perfect solution for your space. As a general rule of thumb, where you are revamping, repairing or extending existing paving, it’s better to pick paving that will coordinate or match what you already have. Where you are creating new patios or pathways, however, you have free rein to choose paving to suit your home and your taste.

Types of garden paving slabs

Concrete paving

Concrete paving is a cost effective solution and council paving slabs provide a great utilitarian option that is ideal for creating a strong foundation for your shed, or somewhere to park your wheelie bins. Hardwearing, long lasting and uniform in appearance, concrete paving is easy to install.

Natural stone paving

Natural stone materials create a more traditional looking garden paving slab with a mid-range price point. Natural stone paving can be made from limestone, sandstone, granite and slate. At Witham Timber, our sandstone paving lends a natural finish to any setting, offering unique colours and patterns, and is ideal for front and back gardens, outdoor dining areas and patios. Choose from Harvest with warm buff and brown blends and some pink tones, Lakeland with a cool palette of grey, brown , and buff tones, or Promenade (also known as Kandla Grey) that has a primarily grey colour with some brown and buff tones, for the perfect look for your home.

Porcelain paving

Porcelain paving is an innovative, man-made product that is durable and low maintenance, consisting of compressed clay tiles that have been litho-printed with a stone- or wood-effect pattern. Frost-, algae- and fade-resistant, porcelain paving has a contemporary aesthetic. Here at Witham Timber, our decorative paving is currently available in 7 options, representing our high end range of paving.
