Different types of fencing: a comprehensive guide to fence materials and their properties

What are the different types of garden fences available? We help you to navigate the types and style of fencing available in the UK to decide which is the best solution for your needs.

A fence is so much more than a few panels of wood or plastic erected round the edge of your property and when it’s time to install a new fence, or replace an existing one, there are lots of factors to consider.

What is the purpose of a fence?

The type of fencing you choose will be largely dictated by the reason you want a fence. For most of us, fencing marks out the boundary of our property, separating it from neighbours, and providing us with privacy from prying eyes. It also provides security and safety, acting as a deterrent to potential trespassers and intruders.  Whether we spend a lot of time in our outdoor spaces or not, we all want our surroundings to be aesthetically pleasing, and the right fence can not only add to the appearance of your home, it can also increase its curb appeal, potentially adding value if you decide to sell.

At Witham Timber, we supply timber and composite fencing for commercial and domestic use, with a wide selection of styles to suit every need.

Closeboard or feather edge timber fence panels

Our closeboard or feather edge fencing is supplied as solid fence panels, manufactured without gaps between the slats. The result is a solid, strong panel which will provide complete privacy. Offering a traditional aesthetic, our feather edge panels are manufactured on-site from pressure treated timbers which we hand pick and grade, to ensure the quality is consistent throughout. The solid nature of its construction means that closeboard fencing is able to withstand strong winds, making it ideal for exposed locations.

Waney lap timber panels

Constructed from overlapping, horizontal slats, waney lap panels will offer the same level of privacy as feather edge, at a lower price point. A great deterrent to intruders, waney lap fencing is less resistant to strong winds than its feather edge cousin and is recommended for domestic homes and gardens. We use only pressure treated timbers in the construction of the waney lap panels which are manufactured at our premises, where we can oversee quality throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Decorative timber fence panels

For anyone wanting a real showstopper fence, look no further than our decorative fence panels. Ideal for making a statement and providing a stunning frame to your garden, our selection of decorative fence panels include curved or flat top designs, with or without trellis. The pressure-treated panels are dual faced, allowing both neighbours to have an attractive panel on display.

Picket fence panels

Our traditionally-styled picket panels make a pretty border or boundary where security does not need to be considered, for example at the front of a house, where the fence can be completed with a picket gate. This fencing is less prone to wind damage, as the gaps allow winds to pass straight through, and it can be painted to coordinate with the exterior of the property.  The open construction of the spaced pales makes a wonderful backdrop for rambling plants, perfect for a cottage-style home.

Composite fencing

While traditional, timber fencing has long been the usual go-to product, more people are now considering composite fencing options as an environmentally-friendly alternative.

What is composite fencing?

Composite fencing is an alternative to timber products and is manufactured from 75% recycled products, in a blend of waste PVC-u and wood fibre. The wood fibre content gives the composite panels an authentic look while the plastic content gives durability, strength and weather resistance. Our low maintenance eco fencing boards are available in a choice of three finishes and can be used with the coordinating eco posts or existing concrete fixings. Our full range can be viewed here.
