FSC timber – what is it and why we should use it

At a time when the world is at its most environmentally aware, FSC timber is widely available. This helpful guide explains what it is and why it is so important that we should all be using it.

It has never been easier to be environmentally friendly in our own homes by using sustainable products and with timber products we are advised to look for the FSC label. But what is the FSC and what does its certification mean for consumers of timber products?

What does FSC mean?

FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, which is a global, non-political organisation founded in 1994 that strives for the responsible and ethical management of forests around the world. Today, its groundbreaking certification system is recognised as the most respected forest certification system in the world. The FSC polices illegal logging and deforestation, protecting workers in the timber industry from poor working practice and ensuring they receive a fair wage.

What is FSC certified timber?

When any timber product, whether it is garden furniture or timber cladding, has been FSC certified, it means that the product has achieved the highest standard possible for its ethical production. Trees harvested for the timber have been managed responsibly to ensure there will be no loss of forestation and the biodiversity of the harvesting area has been protected.

FSC labels

There are three labels assigned to timber products, as standard.

FSC 100% - timber products bearing this label have been sourced from FSC-certified forests.

FSC recycled – these products have been verified 100% recycled.

FSC mixed – products carrying this label “must either be from FSC-certified forests, verified as recycled or classed as controlled wood. Controlled wood is not from FSC-certified forests but it mitigates the risk of the material originating from unacceptable sources.” (Source: FSC.org)

What is a Chain of Custody Certificate?

The FSC chain of custody certificate applies not only to manufacturers of FSC certified timber products, but also to retailers, and it guarantees that products have been verified and audited at every stage of the supply chain, from production to sale.
