Spring garden maintenance guide

When should I start to clean the garden up for Spring? How do I get my greenhouse summer ready? Read the answers here!

When winter seems to have stretched behind us endlessly but spring is finally just around the corner it doesn’t seem too long before we will all be busy in our gardens preparing for the new season ahead.

1 Kickstart your compost

When tidying up beds and borders and removing old leaves, the debris can be composted but be careful to remove any weeds as seeds could germinate, causing problems further down the line. Not only will a compost area provide somewhere for all your organic waste, it will provide you with a rich source of compost that your plants will love! Simply mix grass cuttings with vegetable peelings and woody prunings and turn with a fork every month to aerate. Our composter will help you on your way.

2 Prepare your greenhouse

Get your greenhouse ready for the growing season by cleaning it thoroughly. Wash the outside and inside of the glass with a detergent to remove any build up of grime and algae, which will allow maximum light to enter when most needed, as well as pests that may have taken up residence. Brush debris from the floor and any surfaces with a disinfectant solution and wash all plant pots and seed trays so that young plants do not become infected. Once the greenhouse has dried out thoroughly after a couple of days of good ventilation, inspect it well for damaged vents or panes, replacing any you find. If space is at a premium in your garden and you haven’t got a full-sized greenhouse, perhaps a Mini Greenhouse would suit you more.

3 Sowing and planting

Spring is the ideal time to sow hardy annuals to fill any gaps in beds and borders and to plant summer-flowering bulbs. Herbs can be set, along with early potatoes, asparagus and onion sets. A potting station is a great addition to any garden and the Premier Potting Station will take the back ache out of your seed sowing.

4 Check your decking

With the majority of the bad weather behind us, it is time to turn your attention to decked areas of the garden. Regular brushing should have kept the decking free from damaging dirt and debris but now is the time to give it a thorough clean. Once clean, check that any bolts and screws are sufficiently tightened, replacing any as necessary. If you need to repair any damaged decking boards or posts, or just fancy having fresh decking installed, we have all the supplies needed here, including handrails, spindles and joists.

5 Check fencing, gates and trellis

Spring is the perfect time to check your fencing for any storm damage, signs or rot or panel damage caused throughout the winter. Carefully check individual fence panels for damage, fixing any as you go, and clean the entire length to remove dirt, moss and mildew. Our blog article ‘Five ways to care for wooden fences’ will guide you through exactly how to keep your fencing in tip top condition.

These simple tips will soon have your garden in tip top shape so you can enjoy the summer ahead.
