What are bolt downs and spikes?

When installing a new fence or replacing a damaged fence post, there are lots of ways to secure the posts in place. Our guide looks at fence bolt downs and fence support spikes.

In previous articles, we have discussed how to install wooden fence posts in situations where it is possible to set the fence post in concrete or Postcrete. However, where it is not possible to install a concrete foundation, there are other methods for ensuring your fence will remain strong and stable; these include fence post support spikes and bolt down fence post supports.

What are bolt down fence post supports?

Bolt downs, or fence post support brackets, sit flat on the ground and are bolted or screwed into position at all four corners of a base plate. The fence post is then inserted into the support and retaining bolts are tightened to hold the post securely in place. As the fence post is installed above ground level, it is protected from damage through water and insect infestation.

Where to use a bolt down

Bolt downs are ideal for use on patios, concrete surfaces and timber bases. They can also be used on ground that is too hard to drive a post into.

Features of bolt down supports

Bolts provide a secure fit around the fence post.

Strong and durable.

Protects the fence post from decay and damage.

Easy to replace fence posts in the future.

What are fence post support spikes?

Used when installing fence posts, these are fence post supports in the form of a spike with a box at the top into which the post is placed. The spike is driven into the ground and, once level, the post is secured into the box which is tightened around it for a snug fit.

Installing support spikes

Although a fairly straightforward process involving a mallet or sledgehammer, it is important to ensure the spikes are level, so always use a spirit level and readjust the spikes before inserting the fence posts. Where you are installing spikes into uneven ground, they may need to be driven into the ground at different depths to make up for the uneven surface. Again, check with a spirit level after each spike is installed. A spike may twist as it is hammered into the ground if force is applied off-centre. This can be avoided by turning the spike slightly to allow for possible twisting.
