What is a pedestrian gate?

From 5-bar gates on agricultural land to driveway gates and front garden picket gates, the choice of how to enter your property is extensive. In this article, we take a closer look at a particular type of gate - the pedestrian gate.

What is a pedestrian gate?

Traditionally, pedestrian gates make up parkland fencing where they give access between fenced areas. As the name suggests, a pedestrian gate is designed to allow people to pass through and not vehicles or animals. Today, a pedestrian gate refers to any single width gate, on farmland or residential, through which only pedestrians can pass.

Reasons to install a pedestrian gate

Pedestrian gates can help to secure a property from unwanted or unsolicited visitors and are a deterrent against would-be trespassers and burglars. From a resident’s perspective, pedestrian gates can increase a sense of security within the home.

Where to install a pedestrian gate

Pedestrian gates are used in a wide variety of settings. They can be found in garden walls or fences, to allow passage into and out of a property. They are also found on agricultural land where it is preferable for animals to remain in one place but where people need to pass through, for example when crossing the land. Pedestrian gates can be installed alongside wider gates where it is safer to allow pedestrians entry to a property that also needs to be accessible to vehicles, for example on military bases or at schools.

Types of pedestrian gate

Pedestrian gates can be hip height but, when being used as a security measure, these can obviously be overcome simply by jumping across them. Others are tall gates which are used where security is the priority or when the view beyond is to remain private, for example if it gives way onto a residential garden. Pedestrian gates can be manufactured from timber or metal and can serve aesthetic and functional purposes.

Pedestrian gates from Witham Timber

At Witham Timber, we supply pedestrian gates manufactured from pressure treated timber, in a variety of styles and heights. Our heavy duty tongue and groove wooden gate is made from heavy duty framing and is braced for extra strength; additional mid-point bracing further strengthens the gate. Measuring 1800x900mm, the gate can be made in bespoke sizes. The Elite T&G gate is another fully braced, heavy duty gate supplied in a standard 1750x900mm. For those looking for a more aesthetic gate, we have a selection of lattice-topp gates, including the lattice top horizontal boarded gate and the tongue and groove lattice top gate, both available as 1800x900mm. Where security is less of an issue, our range of picket gates is available with flat tops, pointed tops or round tops, while those preferring an arch top gate also have a wide choice.
