The Stihl HLA 40 is a lightweight, telescopic cordless long-reach hedge trimmer from the AS System, designed for home gardeners who need to reach tall hedges and high shrubs safely from the ground. Extending from 115cm to 260cm with a 45cm double-sided blade and tool-free angle adjustment, it is a versatile and easy-to-use tool for tackling hedges of all shapes and sizes. The HLA 40 is the first long-reach hedge trimmer in STIHL's AS System, powered by the interchangeable AS 2 lithium-ion battery which is compatible with other AS System tools including cordless grass trimmers, leaf blowers, garden pruners, and powered secateurs — making it a practical addition for gardeners already within the AS System ecosystem. On a full AS 2 battery charge, working time is up to 40 minutes.

At just 3.7kg, the HLA 40 is exceptionally light for a long-reach trimmer, and the battery's optimised centre of gravity keeps the tilting torque low, reducing fatigue during use. A soft-grip loop handle allows precise guidance in confined spaces such as between shrubs or alongside fencing, and a shoulder strap can be clipped on quickly for added comfort during longer sessions.

The telescopic shaft adjusts tool-free via a twist-secured clamping sleeve, extending from a compact 115cm up to 260cm — sufficient to trim tall hedges over two metres in height from ground level without steps. For transport and storage, the shaft separates into two sections without tools, reducing the overall length back to 115cm for easy carrying and storage in a garage or shed.

The 45cm double-sided blade is laser-cut, diamond-ground, and hardened for long-lasting sharpness and powerful cutting performance through both directions of travel. The counter-rotating double-stroke blade design produces very low vibration and smooth running, making it easier to hold a straight cutting line across the full width of a hedge. The cutter bar adjusts to three angles between -45° and +70° without tools, covering the tops and sides of hedges from a comfortable stance, and locks parallel to the shaft automatically for safe, compact transport. A tip protector shields the blade ends when working close to the ground or against walls.

An LED charge-level indicator on the battery gives an at-a-glance reading of remaining capacity at the push of a button, helping plan working time and avoid running flat mid-job.
