The O38VO is powered by MTD's ThorX 55H engine — a 179cc 4-stroke OHV unit with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve for long-term durability and a dual-stage air filter to protect the engine in dusty scarifying conditions. The overhead valve configuration reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared to side-valve equivalents, and an integrated muffler keeps operating noise low for a more comfortable working experience. A cord minder system manages the starter cord for tangle-free, hassle-free starting every time.

The working depth of the steel scarifying blades is adjusted via a convenient lever mounted on the handlebar, allowing the setting to be changed without stopping or bending down. At higher depth settings the blades skim through the surface layer to lift and remove moss and thatch, allowing the lawn to breathe and absorb nutrients more effectively. At lower settings the blades cut fine slits into the turf to improve the penetration of air, water, and fertiliser down to the root network — a process known as aeration that promotes stronger, deeper root growth.

The 50-litre debris bag collects lifted material as you work, eliminating the need to rake up afterwards and allowing the full scarifying run to be completed in a single pass. At 39kg the machine is lightweight for its class, and the large-diameter wheels make it easy to push even on uneven or rough ground. The ergonomic handlebar folds fully flat for compact storage in a garage or shed, and the steel deck provides strength and durability for long-term use.
