The MS 212 is built around STIHL's 2-MIX engine technology, which uses four-channel cylinder porting to deliver the fuel-and-air mixture into the cylinder in a more targeted and compressed manner. This improves combustion efficiency, resulting in higher engine performance alongside reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions — meeting the strict EU Stage V directive. The engine is low-maintenance and performs consistently even under sustained load.

Operation has been kept deliberately simple. A single combi-lever covers all start functions, requiring only one start position, and once the saw is switched off the lever automatically returns to the operating position so a warm saw can be restarted immediately without resetting controls. The stop button is easily accessible, and the overall control layout is straightforward for occasional users.

The STIHL anti-vibration system uses buffer and spring elements to absorb engine and chain oscillations before they reach the handles, significantly reducing fatigue and strain on hands, wrists, and joints during extended use.

Both the fuel and oil tanks are transparent, giving a clear at-a-glance view of fluid levels without needing to open anything — so you always know when a top-up is needed before running dry mid-cut. The tool-free bayonet fuel cap allows both tanks to be opened and closed quickly without tools.

A carburettor compensator maintains consistent engine performance, fuel consumption, and exhaust quality over time even as the air filter gradually picks up debris — meaning the filter only needs cleaning when there is a noticeable drop in performance, rather than on a fixed schedule. The side-mounted chain tensioner allows for quick, protected re-tensioning and chain replacement, with the tensioning screw accessed laterally through the sprocket cover.
