The HLA 140 is powered by a 36V lithium-ion battery from the STIHL AP System, inserted directly into the engine housing for improved balance and freedom of movement. STIHL's Constant Power technology ensures consistent cutting performance is maintained throughout the full battery discharge cycle, while the Power Boost function allows the battery and tool to communicate intelligently — delivering maximum available power for the task at hand, with automatic adjustment to protect battery longevity during intensive use. With the recommended AP 30 battery, working time reaches up to 125 minutes on a full charge.

The EC motor drives the blades to a maximum of 4,000 rpm, with three selectable speed settings at 3,200, 3,600, and 4,000 rpm to suit different vegetation types and conditions. Variable speed is controlled via the ergonomic handle without pausing work or changing grip, and slower speeds help extend battery runtime when full power isn't required. The compact, lightweight magnesium transmission reduces overall tool weight without compromising durability — an important consideration for professionals using the tool over extended periods.

The 60cm double-sided blades are laser-cut and diamond-ground, producing exceptionally sharp, long-lasting edges that are friction-optimised to move through foliage efficiently and with less energy draw. The double-sided configuration allows effective cutting in both directions — vertically, horizontally, and around corners — and handles thicker branches with ease. Should the blades become jammed mid-cut, the anti-lock feature automatically reverses blade movement when the trigger is released, freeing the cutters quickly. A tip protector guards the blade ends against damage and makes close-to-ground and wall-edge cutting more manageable.

The cutter head adjusts through 145° to tackle all hedge profiles and working heights from a comfortable stance, and the tool is suited to both left- and right-handed users. At 245cm in total length, it reaches tall and wide hedges without the need for steps or platforms in most situations, and folds flat to 188cm for easier transport between sites. An integrated carrying harness attachment point is available for extended work sessions.

The HLA 140 carries an IPX4 splash-water protection rating, making it suitable for use in rain and wet conditions — important for professional users who cannot always wait for dry weather. The fine metal mesh air filter protects the EC motor and is straightforward to clean for low ongoing maintenance.

STIHL Connected compatibility is built in via the integrated Smart Connector, allowing fleet managers to monitor operating hours, tool age, and maintenance status through the STIHL Connected app and portal — useful for organisations managing multiple tools across sites.
