A complete guide to buying a fence

A complete guide to buying a fence

Have you made the decision to install or replace a garden fence but are feeling overwhelmed with the choice of fencing out there? Our complete guide to buying a fence will help!

The majority of homes in the UK have some kind of garden fencing to mark out the boundary of the property and to provide privacy and/or security, but there are many types of fencing and a choice of materials available. At Witham Timber, we provide timber fencing, concrete fencing and eco fencing.

Timber fencing

At its most basic, a timber fence will consist of fence posts with either wooden boards or wooden rails attached to them. They may or may not feature a gravel board, depending on the type of fence and personal preference.

Timber fencing boards

Timber fencing boards are available as feather edge boards, and waney edge boards. Feather edge boards are attached vertically to horizontal battens on the reverse. Feather edge boards give a strong, rigid fence that will stand up well to seasonal movement. Waney edge boards are horizontal boards that overlap each other to give a good, economical fencing solution ideal for privacy.

Timber rails

Timber fence rails are commonly attached horizontally to vertical fence posts in the construction of a particular type of fence called Post and Rail Fencing. Fence posts are available in a morticed option too, for use in a specific type of post and rail fencing known as Lincolnshire Fencing, and the rails are termed scarf rails.

Timber fence panels

Timber panels are the perfect way to buy your fence ready-made, and can be either traditional or decorative. Traditional fence panels can be waney lap fence panels, or closeboard fence panels (feather edge) and are supplied in a standard 6’ width and a variety of heights from 3’ to 6’. Decorative fence panels add an attractive aesthetic to a garden boundary and can provide a stunning backdrop to plants and shrubs. Choose from straight edge or arched panels or slatted panels with or without trellis to really make your garden boundary as individual as you like.

Concrete fencing

When we talk about concrete fencing, we are referring to mainly concrete slotted posts, concrete recessed posts and concrete gravel boards, as fence panels and boards are not generally manufactured from concrete. Instead, timber fencing products can be used with concrete accessories where a stronger, more durable fence is needed. Concrete fence posts need no maintenance once installed and they will stand up to the strongest winds. They can be used with readymade timber fence panels that simply slot into the concrete posts.

Eco fencing

An eco-friendly alternative to timber fencing, eco fencing is the preferred choice for the environmentally aware homeowner. It is made from a composite material made from 75% recycled products. A complete fencing solution can be achieved with eco boards, eco panel tops, eco posts and post caps. As eco boards can be used with concrete fence posts, many people choose this option when replacing an existing fence, to make the most of existing posts, without the cost of replacing them.
