A guide to garden shelters

A guide to garden shelters – come rain or shine!

While UK summer temperatures are only set to rise year on year, our Great British weather is still prone to showers. Here, we look at different ways to use garden shelters to provide both shade and somewhere to take cover from a passing shower.

Shelters can be used to protect against the sun and the rain serving different purposes, from providing cover for an outdoor seating area to creating a private and shady reading nook.  A functional and attractive addition to any garden there are garden shelters to suit every space and need.

Garden canopies

A practical solution to providing shade or shelter in the garden that doesn’t have to be permanent, is the addition of a garden canopy. Taking up less space than a cantilever parasol on a modestly sized deck or patio, our sun canopies are available free standing and wall mounted, and all are fully retractable. When not in use, for example through the winter months, the fabric canopy can be removed for storage.

Timber pergolas

While, traditionally, timber pergolas have no roof, more and more people are choosing to build a simple pergola with the addition of rafters which can be used to support a fabric covering that can easily be removed as required. Alternatively, allowing climbing and rambling plants to grow up and across the structure is a great way to create a natural canopy under which to eat and entertain and makes a charming addition to any patio area.

Garden gazebo

There’s no mistaking the luxury and grandeur of a gazebo, and these imposing structures are well suited to the larger garden. Featuring an integral roof, often in the style of a bandstand from years gone by, timber gazebos can be used all year round, providing the perfect shelter against rain or sunshine. Ideal for housing a dining area, gazebos also provide the perfect spot to sit and unwind. For extra privacy or shelter, the often open sides of a gazebo can be covered over with lattice panels.

If you are undecided on whether a gazebo or a pergola is right for you, our article Should I install a gazebo or a pergola? will help.

Arbours

Finally, do not underestimate the value of a wooden arbour for adding shade or providing a spot of shelter in the garden. Perfect for a traditional, English country style garden, an arbour adds a sense of charm and old world character to any space. The ideal location for a reading hideaway, or just somewhere to sit with a glass of wine or cup of tea at the end of the working day, arbours will accommodate two people comfortably and are available in a choice of styles. The Winchester arbour, for example, has an enclosed seat featuring a hinged lid to offer useful under seat storage, while the Dartmouth arbour has open, diamond trellis sides and a closed, slatted roof.
