How to build a wooden fence without panels

When we think of fencing, we often think of wooden panels attached to wooden posts. But there are lots of alternatives to traditional panel fencing and here we look at the most popular.

With fencing providing so much more in today’s gardens than just a privacy barrier, the possibilities for erecting something a little different are wide. Developers and home owners can inject some personality into their outdoor spaces with the following ideas.

Trellis Fencing

The interwoven lattice design of trellis provides a boundary that allows you to look through it and beyond, making it ideal for use in zoning off areas in the garden. Used as a boundary, trellis fence panels can be attached easily to planed timber fence posts, to provide the perfect backdrop for climbing plants. The Heavy Duty Trellis Panel is available in a standard width of 1.8m (6ft) and a selection of heights, from 30cm (12”) to 1.8m (6ft) and features a straight top. If you prefer a more decorative aesthetic, the Omega Diamond Lattice Full Trellis features an attractive curved top. If you prefer a versatile lattice, the Heavy Duty Trellis Panel, Square Lattice can be used against an existing panel fence to provide support for plants, or as a fence in its own right. In shorter lengths, this is also ideal for uses as a trellis fencing topper.

Picket Fencing

A picket fence is the perfect solution for anyone wanting to create boundaries around a property where security does not have to be a consideration, for example to enclose a front garden. Available as individual picket pales with a round or flat top profile, or as picket fence panels with a round top edge, our picket fencing is manufactured from pressure treated softwood sourced from sustainable forests. Our recent article will tell you All about picket fencing.

Post and rail fencing

More often seen in agricultural settings, post and rail fencing is a traditional type of fence that is made up of horizontal timber rails fastened between upright timber posts. The open aspect of this type of fencing gives an uninterrupted view of the landscape beyond, but is not recommended where a wind break is needed. Wooden mortised posts can be used to create a particular kind of post and rail fencing known as Lincolnshire Fencing, where  the rails are fed through the posts.

If you crave a different look for your garden fencing but still prefer a traditional fence panel, why not consider concrete fence posts with concrete gravel boards?

Closeboard fencing

Also known as feather edge fencing, this is a heavy duty and robust fence type that looks particularly attractive when installed with concrete posts and gravel boards. Perfect for an area requiring a higher level of security, closeboard fencing is durable and long lasting.

Waney lap fencing

Waney lap fence panels are ideal for landscapers and designers working to budget constraints, who still want to deliver a pleasing aesthetic. Our standard panel comes in a 6ft width with a choice of heights up to 6ft. However, if you require a bespoke size for your project, we will be happy to help.
