Protek wood treatments – everything you need to know

When treating your fence or shed, and staining your decking, the products available can be confusing. We stock the Protek range of products and here we tell you why.

Since the 1980s, Protek’s mission has been to provide effective and long lasting wood treatments and stains that will not harm the user, or have an adverse effect on the environment. Launched at a time when creosote was still widely used as a timber treatment, Protek manufactured only water-based products with organic pigments for a lower environmental impact.

At Witham Timber, we supply a range of Protek products for your every need.

Protek Shed and Fence Wood Treatment

Protek shed and fence treatment is a cost effective solution for treating timber fences and sheds. Its thin, watery consistency lends itself to application by brush or low pressure spray, and it can be used on both finished (planed) or rough sawn wood.

Completely harmless to animals, pets and plants, the Protek shed and fence treatment is ideal for animal housing and timber planters. As it contains wax additives for water resistance, one coat will colour and weather-proof, with subsequent coats deepening the colour. It is advised, however, that for sheds two coats should be applied initially, with only one coat needed for future maintenance. Being water-based means that it is easy to clean up with warm water and detergent, negating the need for white spirit or paint stripping solutions.

Protek shed and fence treatment can be used on garden furniture, pergolas, and children’s playhouses. It can also be applied to masonry and terracotta!

Protek Wood Stain and Protector

Used exactly like a traditional garden paint, Protek wood stain and protector will waterproof and protect timber, creating  a micro-porous coating that contains a mould inhibitor; it also offers weather, and UV resistance. For larger areas like fencing, the stain can be applied with a low pressure garden sprayer.  Nourishing, quick-drying and low in odour, this eco-friendly alternative to creosote is available in a range of popular colours and can be used in the same situations as the shed and fence wood treatment.

Protek Decking Stain

Formulated using a new generation resin, the Protek deck stain provides a tough coating that is less prone to the cracking and peeling that can often be seen with traditional stains. The added resin content of the stain gives a flexible and hard-wearing finish perfect for decked areas with high traffic.

A high colour concentration formulation provides an enriched colour, while the linseed oil base offers great timber penetration and excellent eco credentials.

Available in eight popular colours, the deck stain helps to reduce the moisture content of timber, making it less prone to frost damage. As well as decking and balustrades, the deck stain can be used on sheds, summerhouses, garden furniture and children’s play areas, as it complies with EN71-3 relating to child toy safety.

PLEASE NOTE that no wood stain should be applied to freshly treated or newly laid decking as it may have trouble bonding to the timber; new decking should be allowed to weather for at least 3 months before applying any colour or stain, to give the preservative in the pressure treatment time to fix without reacting with any top coat.
