How to maintain a timber shed

How to maintain a timber shed

For many of us, buying a new timber shed is a considered purchase and something of an investment. To ensure it lasts as long as possible, your shed should be maintained correctly - our latest guide shows you how.

Regular care, maintenance and correct treatment will allow your timber shed to provide you with storage for years, and will withstand whatever weather conditions it is exposed to. Taking the time to follow our advice in the following areas will pay dividends in the long term.

Timber shed foundations

As with any construction project, your shed will only be as good as the foundation it rests upon, so careful consideration should be given to your choice of base and where you position it. A solid foundation that is level and flat is essential for ensuring your shed will remain upright and true, with no leaning, and that its base remains dry. Our article What foundations are needed to install a garden shed? is packed full of useful help and advice.

Protecting a timber shed roof

At Witham Timber, all our wooden sheds are supplied with quality felt on the roof, that is professionally fitted at the point of manufacture. The felt is intended to last for several years but will be exposed overtime to damage from weather conditions and also wildlife. Checking the roof of your shed regularly is vital to ensure any damage is identified as soon as possible. If any damage to the roofing felt is left unchecked, the roof will deteriorate and let water into the shed, causing damp and damage to anything stored inside. Our step by step guide to replacing shed roofing felt explains exactly how a competent DIYer can do this easily.

Protecting a timber shed against damp

The biggest threat to any timber shed is rain and damp weather. All our timber sheds are manufactured from quality timber that has been pressure treated for durability and longevity. However, once you have installed your new shed, we recommend that you treat it with a specialist treatment such as  Protek Shed and Fence Wood Treatment or Protek Wood Stain and Protector, ideally within the first 2-4 weeks. Thereafter, your shed should be treated on a regular basis, preferably every year.

How to keep a shed free from damp

In addition to the above steps for maintaining your timber shed, there are other things that can be done to prevent damp and moisture from penetrating the interior, where valuable equipment may be stored. Keeping the shed well ventilated is a must – open windows and doors regularly or consider installing vents if this is not possible. How to damp proof a wooden shed has further advice on this, including tips to store tools in airtight containers and to avoid storing open containers of liquid.
